DHAKA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Lightning strikes in parts of Bangladesh Wednesday killed 20 more people.

Hours after a severe northwester coupled with thunderbolts lashed parts of the country, a total of 20 deaths were reported by local media.

The majority of the lightning fatalities usually occur in rural Bangladeshi areas.

Thundershowers accompanied by squally wind and lighting flashes also occurred in capital Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

No fatality has so far been reported in the capital city.

Death due to lightning strikes is common in Bangladesh during this time of the year, as the weather changes from the dry season to the rainy summer season.

But the country is experiencing a surge of lightning strike deaths in recent years.

Experts here blame the rise in lightning deaths directly on climate change that made Bangladesh more vulnerable to the impacts.

Lightning strikes in the past two months reportedly killed at least 100 people in the country.
