Ukraine asks Swedish court to reverse ruling on gas transit dispute with Russia

KIEV, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's state-run energy company Naftogaz said on Monday it has requested the Swedish Court of Appeal to reverse its ruling on a Ukraine-Russia gas transit case.

Yuriy Vitrenko, Naftogaz chief commercial officer, wrote on Facebook that the official request has been sent to the court and its text will be published in the near future.

Last week, the Swedish Court of Appeal has suspended a ruling of the Stockholm arbitration court, under which Naftogaz was granted a compensation of 4.63 billion U.S. dollars for the failure of Russia's gas giant Gazprom to supply the contracted volume of gas for transit via Ukraine.

In 2009, Ukraine and Russia signed agreements on the supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine and on its transit to Europe via the Ukrainian territory. Both deals expire in 2019.

Since 2014, Ukraine and Russia have been embroiled in two separate legal disputes regarding the transit of gas and gas purchases.
