LUSAKA, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said Monday that it plans to increase electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts by 2030.

Emeldah Chola, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, said the government wants to increase electricity generation from the current 3,100 megawatts in order to meet anticipated demand.

She said when meeting a delegation of investors from South Africa that the government has embarked on various projects in order to improve generation capacity.

While acknowledging that 80 percent of the country's electricity came from hydro source, the official said the government has embarked on diversification of the energy sector to alternative energy sources such as solar, thermal and wind energy.

The official called on investors to explore the country's potential in the energy sector.

The 25-member delegation arrived in Zambia on Sunday to explore investment opportunities in various sectors of the economy.

The delegation, whose main focus was in steel, energy, rail and mining sectors, was expected to hold meetings with various government ministries and the private sector.

Karabo Modimokwane, Director of South Africa Department of Trade and Industry, said South African businesses were looking for projects where they could partner with their Zambian counterparts.
