DAMASCUS, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- A powerful explosion shook a former military base near Damascus International Airport on Wednesday, state-run Al-Thawra newspaper reported, citing official sources.

The report said the blast was caused by remnants of war near the airport, while Syrian opposition outlet Sham TV claimed it resulted from an Israeli drone targeting the military site.
