BERLIN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Robert Lewandowski's hat-trick helped defending champions Bayern Munich to take all three points from Schalke in the second round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

The "Bavarians" secured their first win of the season as the "Royal Blues" failed to stop Robert Lewandowski, who scored his fifth goal with two games played into the new season.

Schalke started confidently into the encounter and made Bayern's life difficult in the opening stage.

Bayern grew into the game as the clock ticked and came close through Lewandowski twice. However, Schalke's goalkeeper Alexander Nubel was on guard and defused a volley and a powerful header from the Poland international in the 17th minute.

Nubel was hapless moments later though, as Jonjoe Kenny fouled Kingsley Coman inside the bow allowing Lewandowski to slot home the subsequent penalty clinically into the bottom left corner.

For the remainder of the first half Bayern controlled possession whereas Schalke were unable to pose any threat to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

After the break, Bayern caught a perfect start into the second half as Lewandowski curled an awarded free kick over Schalke's wall to slot home into the top left corner with 50 minutes into the game.

Schalke responded well and pressed for a goal but David Wagner's men lacked in accuracy in front of the goal or misplaced the final pass.

The German record champions gave Schalke ground but in the closing staged Bayern took over full control and tied up the win in the 75th minute when Lewandowski benefitted on Coman's assist to slot home from the edge of the box into the near post corner.

"We controlled the match over ninety minutes and neutralized Schalke's actions. We staged overall a faultless performance and played a great game," Bayern's head coach Niko Kovac said.

"Bayern grabbed a deserved win here but my team played a good second half. I think we deserved one goal," Schalke's head coach David Wagner said.

The following matches conclude the second round in Bundesliga on Sunday: Leipzig host Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin clash with Wolfsburg.
